The easiest way to avoid dead directories is submiting to new directories. Many webmasters spend a lot of hours with their new directory, but after some time they start working on other sites and there is no time for directory.

1. What do people want?
First you will need to use this tool to find out which keyword are popular with crowds. About 30 search/day is ok.

2. How many competitors do you have?
You go to Google.com and type in your keyword. Than check how many results do you have. Less results, easier work.

More searches and less results keyword have, better niche is.

I started my cooking site few moths ago. I wanted to be first for free recipes, but now I know this is too hard.

But this site have lots of recipes on and I get a lot of traffic from keywords, like Biscochito Cookie Recipe. I’m not talking about 1000 visitors per day, but I get about 3 visitors from these keyword. And I have about 50 keywords which bring me 3 visitors each = 150 visitors - this is long tail effect.

It is true, I’ll get about 1000 visitors if I would be on first page in google for free recipes, but it is too hard.

Don’t forget, if you have duplicated content long tail effect won’t bring you traffic.
